Winning photos of "Small World"


This is the 37th edition of the international competition organized by Niko photomicrograph n. It recognizes the work of those who have managed to capture smaller organisms - and yet complex - in a visually appealing and artistic value, but also takes into account the contribution of these professionals have made ​​to the various fields science to which they belong. In this year, for example, the top prize was awarded to Dr. Igor Siwanowicz of Neurobiology Max Planck Institute in Germany. Let's look at the shot that won him this award, along with others of the most prominent.


Among the top five in the event we find this approach to the surface of a microchip, which took fifth place. It belongs to the German Alfred Pasieka.

In the fourth place we find the work of Robin Young of the University and British Columbia in Canada. It is a liver - genus of herbaceous perennial of the buttercup family.

Third place went to Frank Fox Fachhochschule Trier, with the photograph which illustrates this post at first. It belongs to a live specimen of a class of algae, Melosira Monliformis.

Following this work we have Donna Stolz, University of Pittsburgh , United States. This is a blade of grass magnified 200 times.

Finally, the first place, to the aforementioned Igor Siwanowicz. The image is of a green lacewing larvae rested on his arm (and stung him!). It can be seen dorzales side branches and some species have vegetative debris loading, exoskeletons of prey, and others. According to the author, this image shows that there is beauty in "ugly."

And finally, an added image as a "bonus track". It is this shot of John H. British Brackenbury where you can see two coexisting mosquito larvae in a drop of water. Disgusting and beautiful at the same time, right?
